Largest of all toucan species, males and females are similar in color, but females slightly smaller. The body is glossy black with white extending from ear coves around to the throat and upper breast. The tail is white and red. Yellow and orange/ red tinge the breast.
Toucans are not good fliers, but have powerful legs for hopping. They spend most of their time in the high treetops and build their nests in tree holes. Sleeping toucans lay their beak across their back in a protective posture.
