Rhino poaching has reached a crisis point, fueled by the growing demand for rhino horn in Southeast Asia. The number of South African rhinos poached in 2013 rose to 1,004 from 668 the prior year. Gather your herd and charge to the Zoo during World Rhino Weekend to learn more about these imperiled animals and the poaching crisis.  Stop by the Indian rhino and African white rhino exhibits to meet the zookeepers who work with these amazing animals, and enjoy a variety of rhino-themed activities and educational displays.  Learn more at the Zoo or visit www.rhinos.org.

African Penguin Awareness Day
Saturday, October 11 • 9:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Learn about these endangered birds and the plight of the wild population which is in dramatic decline.  Visit the Zoo’s Penguin Beach habitat for educational talks and feedings and watch the charismatic creatures feed, swim, waddle and play. In addition to efforts here at home, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo proudly supports the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), a nonprofit organization based in South Africa, dedicated to protecting and rehabilitating wild seabirds.

Congratulations to Carly S. from Blake High School, the overall winner of our 2014 Penguin Art Contest!
