| INDIAN STAR TORTOISE |
Geochelone elegans |
|
Range: |
India and Sri Lanka |
The Star tortoise gets its name from its tell-tale shell: a gray-brown shell comprised of raised humps with star-patterned-mottled brown stripes extending from the center of each hump. In this species, females are generally much larger than males and have larger humps on their shells. The shape of these shells is a natural adaptation to help the tortoise right itself should it be turned over.
