The blue-breasted kingfisher is a tree kingfisher with a wide distribution. The birds have bright blue heads, wings, backs and tails. Their under parts are white with a blue breasted band, for which they are named for. The birds have black feathers on their shoulder. Their bills are orange on the top and black on the bottom. The blue breasted kingfisher sexes are similar, but the younger birds are duller in color.
