RED-SPOTTED HAWKFISH

Range:
Southern Florida to the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and South America

The Redspotted Hawkfish has a whitish body with irregular brown bars, the last of which near the tail being almost black. The head and gill area are covered with small red spots. The dorsal fin has tassel-like "cirrhi" on the tips and red dots throughout.

Being of such small size requires the Red-Spotted Hawkfish to always be on alert. They are easily spooked and will hop from perch to perch to investigate their surroundings.

 




Habitat: Commonly found in rocky areas, caves and reefs.
Diet: Carnivore: Feeds primarily on small crustaceans, particularly copepods, shrimps and shrimp larvae, crabs and crab larvae as well as polychaetes.

Reproduction & Offspring:

Male and females stay in different perching points all day and males joins ready-to spawn female usually prior to sunset. Courtship involves males positioning themselves parallel to the female, at times nuzzling the female's abdomen.
